Installing New AC Equipment
MechaniCool takes extra care to ensure that your new comfort equipment is installed properly. In conjunction with you, the homeowner, we determine the right solutions to improve comfort and increase energy efficiency in your home.
The typical lifespan of a cooling system in the Southwest is 10-15 years. Although an older unit may still be functioning, the decrease in energy efficiency or major component repairs may be adversely affecting you financially in the long run.
In Arizona, there are typically two types of cooling systems in two configurations dependent on how your home was constructed.
Heat Pump Systems
Heat Pump systems are typically used in areas where natural gas is not available (although can be used in homes that have other natural gas appliances). A heat pump uses all components of the system in both heating and cooling.
Straight Cool with Gas Furnace
Straight Cool with Gas Furnace uses natural gas for heat. The condensing unit is used only during the cooling function. Heating uses only the furnace. Both heating and cooling use the blower motor.
Split System
Split System means that there is an outdoor unit (condenser) and components in the attic or a closet in the home or garage, often referred to as the indoor unit. The indoor unit is typically an air handler (heat pump), or a furnace and coil (gas), both have a blower motor.
Packaged System
Packaged System normally is roof-mounted, although in some areas they do sit on the ground. These can either be a heat pump system or straight cool with gas. All components are packaged into one piece of equipment.
There are some systems, usually found in manufactured homes, that utilize electric heat instead of gas or heat pump.

Proper installation of a new system is essential for optimal operation of the equipment.
How We Ensure a Quality Split System Installation
- New electrical whip and disconnect box with fuses, knowing new equipment should not be installed with aged electrical components.
- Replacement of supply and return plenum boxes fabricated to the new unit specifications for a tight fit.
- Unistrut and All-thread suspension system for attic components to ensure level. Chains tend to stretch over time with the expansion and contraction of the metal rings.
- Moisture safety switch and secondary drain pan to protect your home in the event of a condensate drain clog.
- Vacuum refrigerant lines to below 500 microns to ensure removal of any moisture or aero-noncondensables and facilitate efficient flow of refrigerant
- Ensure that the return duct is large enough for proper air exchange, and either enlarge or add an additional return when needed.
- Contract with repair professional to return attic access to pre-installation condition. We often need to remove the access trim, or the drywall around the access is damaged when removing and placing new equipment in the attic.
How We Ensure a Quality Package Unit Installation
- New electrical whip and disconnect box with fuses, knowing new equipment should not be installed with aged electrical components.
- Replace unit stand and unit elbow, fabricated to the new unit specifications for a tight fit.
- Ensure that the return duct is large enough for proper air exchange, and either enlarge or add an additional return when needed.
- Contract with a fully insured crane service to remove old system and lift new system onto the roof.
